Hiking in Hawaii
Adventure through Hawaii
If you are looking to combine tropical paradise with adventure, Hawaii is the destination for you! Each of the islands offer their own incredible hikes and these range from easy trail walks to challenging 3-day+ long excursions. No matter the skill level, there are many hiking opportunities for everyone in Hawaii!
The geography of Hawaii is unique and captivating and with no real winter, year-round hiking is possible. Wander through volcanic craters, discover endemic plant and animal life, enjoy the amazing lush valley views and listen to the peaceful chirping of the native Apapane and Elepaio birds. With countless lookouts, trails and national parks, Hawaii is the perfect place to step out and explore!
Hike across volcanoes!
Most hiking adventures in Hawaii begin in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which offers more than 150-miles of trails. Stroll through lava tubes at Nahuku (Thurston Lava Tube), take a hike along volcanic craters at the Chain of Craters Road or walk over volcanic fields to witness the power of creation as lava flows into the sea in Kalapana.
Hawaii emerged from the sea millions of years ago, forged by the power of volcanoes. Today, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is one of the few places in the world where visitors can come face to face with an active volcano. The chance to safely explore Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, is a once in a lifetime opportunity not to be missed while in Hawaii!
What to pack
When hiking in Hawaii make sure you are prepared with the essentials! Wear a good pair of hiking shoes with tread so you are prepared for all kinds of trails. Light pants or shorts are necessary to keep cool throughout the day and if venturing into rainforests or valleys it would be a great idea to pack a light rain jacket. Bring a backpack with enough food and water and keep you fuelled throughout the hike, depending on the length and intensity. And as Hawaii is known for its beautiful sunshine remember to pack a bottle of sunscreen!
