What to pack for your Hawaii holiday
Aloha! Have you finally settled on the perfect Hawaii holiday package for you and your travel companion(s)? Counting down the months, weeks, days until jetting off to your tropical paradise and luxury escape? Panicking about what you need to bring?
Don’t waste a second stressing out about what should accompany you on your Hawaiian getaway. All My Hawaii holidays that have been booked with Hawaiian Airlines come with a substantial baggage allowance of 2 bags x 32kg per person checked luggage and 10kg carry on, so there is plenty of space for your entire wardrobe. But trust us, you won’t need even a portion of what’s hiding in your closet since there is so much shopping to be done in Waikiki!
Hawaii is a tropical destination with a climate to match. Average temperatures in Hawaii are 29°C throughout the year, with lows sinking to 25°C and temps at night dropping around 12°C, with an average year-round water temperature of 23°C. Rainfall may dampen the ground but not the temperature, so even the rainy season on outer islands sees warm days with cool evenings. Since many My Hawaii resorts are located on the waterfront, night time temperatures can drop with the accompanying sea breeze.
What does this mean for you? With the warm weather and traditional surf atmosphere, dressy clothes are not a necessity, nor are thick, heavy jumpers. My Hawaii experts recommend lightweight, breathable clothing that can keep the sun off your shoulders during those lazy beachside afternoons. A sundress or two for evening meals at the five-star restaurants lining the avenues are recommended, however there is no taboo for wearing shorts and a top out for dinner and cocktails. If the plan is to hit some clubs and go dancing or to a show, dressing up a bit is the norm.
What the girls should bring: one or two light dresses, skirts or sarongs, two or three tops with and without sleeves, swimmers, thongs, a light cover for your arms (long sleeved blouse, for example), a pair of light jeans for the evening, and two pairs of shorts for any adventure activities planned.
What the guys should bring: a couple pairs of shorts, t-shirts and singlets, swimmers, a light pair of jeans for the evening, a lightweight top for cooler evenings, thongs and some light shoes to wear with jeans for a fancier dinner.
Everyone should ensure they have a hat, sunscreen, light rain jacket, sturdy and broken-in walking shoes or sandals if you plan on doing a lot of walking or hiking (volcanoes, waterfalls or Diamond Head, for example). If you’re planning on hanging out by the pool, thongs will suit just fine. Bear in mind that all resorts provide guests with beach towels to use at the resort swimming pools, shampoo, conditioner and body wash.
ABC shops are ubiquitous throughout Hawaii, especially in Honolulu, and here is the place you can find anything you may have forgotten, from aspirin to mascara to a toy ukulele. There are also big-name shops like Walmart which are all-in-one stores, or the infamous International Marketplace for souvenirs including shot glasses, magnets, key rings and t-shirts. The real shopping, however, is done at one of the two main centres in Waikiki: Ala Moana shopping centre, which is easily arrived at with the free Aloha Trolley Pass included in your My Hawaii holiday, or the Waikele Premium Outlets which have everything from Calvin Klein and GAP to Vans and Converse. Here it’s possible to shop for shoes, accessories, clothes, luggage, fur coats, designer dresses and so much more – it’s a day trip itself, and in many My Hawaii packages, a visit here is already included.
Remember that less is more, and you’re sure to include some shopping in your Hawaii holidays and pick up a beach towel, t-shirt, a few pairs of Levi’s or a new pair of board shorts. By leaving yourself plenty of room on the way there, it means more space to bring souvenirs home!
