Hawai’i Visa and Entry Requirements

Planning a trip to Hawai’i? Understanding the entry requirements will help ensure your vacation starts smooth and stress-free. Whether you’re travelling for relaxation, adventure or family time, here’s what you need to know about visas, passports and paperwork.

Do Australians need a visa for Hawai’i?

Good news! Australian citizens do not need a visa to visit Hawai’i for tourism purposes. Hawai’i is part of the United States and Australian visitors can enter under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). This allows for stays of up to 90 days without a visa, provided you meet certain requirements. All you need is an approved ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation).

What paperwork do I need to go to Hawai’i?

Before travelling, make sure you have the following essential documents:

  • Valid passport: Your passport must be valid for at least six months after your holiday return date.
  • ESTA authorisation: If you’re eligible for the Visa Waiver Program, you’ll need an approved ESTA before boarding your flight.
  • Return or onward ticket: Proof of onward travel is sometimes requested.

Double-check your airline’s requirements and apply for your ESTA well in advance to avoid any last-minute surprises.

Do I need a visa or ESTA to visit Hawai’i?

Most travellers from countries like Australia, New Zealand, the UK and many European nations can visit Hawai’i using the Visa Waiver Program with an approved ESTA.

  • ESTA is an online application that pre-approves your entry into the US. It’s typically valid for two years or until your passport expires.
  • If you’re not eligible for the VWP or plan to stay longer than 90 days, you will need to apply for a visitor visa (B-2) at a US embassy or consulate.

Remember, an approved ESTA or visa does not guarantee entry – final admission is determined by US customs and border protection officers upon arrival.

What are the passport requirements?

To visit Hawai’i, your passport must be:

  • Valid for the entire duration of your stay, plus a recommended six months of validity beyond your travel dates as a precaution.
  • Make sure your passport is in good condition and not damaged or expired.
  • For travellers applying for ESTA, your passport must be an e-passport with an embedded electronic chip.

It’s always a good idea to carry a photocopy of your passport and keep digital copies on your phone or email, just in case. Please stay up to date with passport, visa and general travel requirements on Sherpa.
