Legends & Modern Luxury at Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa

Nestled into the western side of Hawaii’s lush Valley Isle, curled around the iconic Pu’u Keka’a (or Black Rock) you’ll find the incomparable Sheraton Maui Resort and Spa. 23 oceanfront acres make up this recently-refurbished, historic resort, creating the perfect backdrop to celebrate both old and new while revelling in Hawaiian paradise.

Modern Luxury – Renovations

In July this year the 508 guest rooms and suites of Sheraton Maui Resort and Spa underwent an impressive 26.5 million dollar upgrade, taking luxury to the next level and ensuring the ultimate in modern comfort while still celebrating the Sheraton’s heritage as Ka’anapali’s oldest resort. Themed rooms evoke the vibrant colour and culture of Maui, as well as sister islands Lanai and Molokai. Original artworks and seamless design elements flow through the rooms, tying together the location and its history with a sleek, contemporary feel. If you can bring yourself to leave your room, sink into the 130-metre lagoon-style pool or outdoor Jacuzzi set between lava rock formations. Be enchanted by the views, and entertained by a wide array of activities including the two 18-hole championship golf courses only a short stroll away. Whether you’re here for adventure, romance or fun, Sheraton Maui serves up your dream Hawaiian holiday with style and charm.

Legend – The Cliff Dive

A key part of Sheraton Maui’s considerable charm comes from the sacred cultural site it sits beside. Pu’u Keka’a, an ancient lava flow that meets the sea on Ka’anapali Beach, is where Hawaiians believed their spirits jumped from this world into the next after death. The cultural significance of Black Rock is celebrated today with the traditional cliff dive ceremony, as a way for visitors to connect with the past and for islanders to honour their ancestors. At sunset each day travellers and locals alike gather along the beach or at the Cliff Dive Grill to witness the ceremony. An experienced youth climbs the ancient, jagged lava flow to the sound of conch shells blowing, as others dance the hula or light ceremonial torches. He tosses his lei to the waves as an offering to the ancestors, and following the footsteps of 18th-century King Kahekili, dives from the promontory into the ocean with the sunset as a fiery backdrop.

So if the postcard-perfect white sandy beaches, swaying coconut palms and pure, cool waters of the Pacific don’t win you over, the legend of Pu’u Keka’a and modern luxury of Sheraton Maui will.
